How to get from Manila to Puerto Galera — the bus, the ferry, and how to get around once you land.

Puerto Galera sits at the northern tip of Oriental Mindoro, just across the Verde Island Passage from Batangas. It feels like a world away from the city, yet from Manila you can go from traffic to turquoise water in about four to five hours. Here is exactly how the journey works — and how to get around once you arrive.
The quick version
- Manila → Batangas Port by bus or van — about 2 to 3 hours.
- Batangas Port → Balatero, Puerto Galera by fast ferry or RORO — about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Land at Balatero Port, then take a tuk-tuk or motorbike to your hotel.
Step 1 — Manila to Batangas Port
Everything starts at Batangas Port. From Metro Manila the easy options are:
- Bus (cheapest and most common). JAM Liner, DLTB and ALPS run frequently from Buendia (Pasay), Cubao and PITX straight to Batangas Grand Terminal / Batangas Port via the STAR Tollway. Reckon on 2–3 hours and roughly ₱200–₱250.
- Private van or car. Via SLEX and the STAR Tollway the drive is about 2 hours — handy for groups or if you are carrying dive or beach gear.
Leave Manila with a buffer — aim to reach the port at least 3–4 hours before your intended ferry so traffic never costs you the crossing.
Step 2 — Batangas Port to Puerto Galera
At the pier, head to Passenger Terminal Building No. 3 (Zone 3) to buy your boat ticket. A small terminal fee (about ₱30) plus an environmental fee are collected on entry. Two kinds of boat make the crossing — and that is it, there are no bangka crossings from Batangas:
- Fast ferry (fastcraft) — the quickest and most popular, roughly ₱500–₱600, about 1 hour.
- RORO — a slower roll-on/roll-off vessel, around ₱500, a little longer but steady in bigger swell.
The main operators are Montenegro Shipping Lines, Galerian Water Transport and Island Water. Departures run through the day from early morning until roughly late afternoon (the last boats usually leave around 4:30 PM), so a morning start keeps your options open.
You arrive at Balatero Port
Boats from Batangas now dock at Balatero Port — Puerto Galera's sea gateway, a short ride from the town proper. From here it is a quick hop to Sabang, the Poblacion (town centre), White Beach and the western barangays.
Getting around Puerto Galera
Local transport here is a little different from the rest of the Philippines — you will not find the usual jeepneys. Instead:
- Tuk-tuks — the everyday way to get around, perfect for short hops within town and between nearby barangays.
- Motorbikes — motorbike taxis (habal-habal) are fast and reach the farther, hillier spots; you can also rent one to explore on your own.
For island-hopping, snorkelling trips and dive outings you will ride a bangka (outrigger boat), arranged through your resort or a local operator. Bangkas are for tours and excursions, though — they are not how you hop between beaches day to day.
Tips for a smooth trip
- Travel in the morning — you will comfortably make the ferry schedule and arrive in daylight.
- Carry small bills for terminal fees, tuk-tuks and motorbike rides.
- In peak season (Holy Week, long weekends) expect queues at the port — go early.
- Weather moves boat schedules; build in a little buffer, especially in the rainy months.
